I'd Rather be Sewing!
Actually, I would rather do anything else than spend time in the kitchen. I have always hated the food thing. Don’t put me on the food committee for a church party; it might be a mistake. Ask me to take dinner to someone who is sick? They might get worse! Instead of eating at our house, I have been known to give the missionaries money and let them escape to a reputable restaurant for dinner. Most of the time it’s hit and miss for me in the kitchen, so my poor family is shocked when dinner is edible. That’s why I like to sew: Finished products last longer than 5 minutes, you can unpick your mistakes and it won’t hurt anybody!

I'd Rather be Sewing!
When we were first married, after accidentally cooking my new ‘Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook’ on the stovetop (really! see photo), my husband Rod chuckled and said, “Honey, since you were a Home Ec. Major, I thought I was getting a good cook for a wife!” What a shame! It’s not for the lack of training from my excellent-cook mother or many teachers in the classroom. The kitchen is not my comfort zone. Occasionally there have been moments of brilliance — like the time I spent two days making a 14 layer Jell-O salad for Christmas. Wow!
But, for the most part, my family won’t be remembering the holidays for their delicious smells and gourmet sights around the table. It’s a good thing I have so many other abilities outside of the kitchen!
Now, the funny thing is, after all these years of struggling in the kitchen, I found out that I like to make soup and (even stranger) people really like it! They ask for my recipes. Ha! Isn’t that hilarious? Two friends said that the only thing they wanted for Christmas this year was my soup recipes. It must be a Christmas Miracle!
So here they are the lovingly tried and tested recipes sampled by my brave family!
